Approximately 80 -90% of all failures of hydraulic components are due to contaminated oil. This contamination can be from water, chemincals or particles and enter the hydraulic system through various means such as quick release couplings , shaft seals etc, topping up etc. Even New oil is not Clean Oil .....If you use hydraulic oil from a large drum, there is a high chance that it already contains some water and dirt particles; new hydraulic oil typically has a cleanliness level of ISO 4406 23/21/18, which is more than most hydraulic systems will tolerate. If the system has a rating of say, 20/18/15, then the new hydraulic oil is already too contaminated, as a single digit increase in any of those numbers is effectively a doubling of the contamination level for each micron size.
